 ALTON  S. TOBEY

  Der Schrei (The Shriek)

Over the course of two decades Tobey created dozens of paintings in a signature style he called Der Schrei. Like most artists, he found the Holocaust unthinkable and barbaric. The Der Schrei paintings force one to confront the unbearable atrocity millions of Jews faced at the hands of Adolf Hitler through their systematic annihilation during World War II. For more about these works, read a PDF review of Tobey's Der Schrei by the noted art restorer and critic Raymond Tubbs.

During his lifetime, Tobey actively worked to insure that these paintings were exhibited extensively throughout Europe and South America; and donated a number of them to organizations concerned with human rights. In line with his wishes; museums, galleries or other institutions that may be interested in exhibiting Der Schrei are invited to contact his estate for information on their availability.
