 ALTON  S. TOBEY

The Religious Paintings

Alton Tobey's creative diversity spanned virtually all aspects of culture, including religious iconography and representations. Below are several examples of his creations for The Franklin Mint who published these three and many other reproductions of his original paintings.

Thy Will Be Done
#377. Oil on plywood, 25 x 20

The Last Supper
#387. Oil on Illustration brd. & plywood, 25 x 20

The Saviour
#868. Oil on plywood, 25 x 20

Below is the original painting for The Lord is My Shepherd, another commision from The Franklin Mint, and on the right is the alternate version of Thy Will Be Done, one of America's favorite religious paintings that have been reproduced as prints in many sizes.

Thy Will Be Done

Two of the most iconic depictions of Christ are the solitary portraits below. Alton Tobey created the unique trinity form "A.T." signature style featured in the bust portrait around this period.

 Jesus

Jesus in Prayer
#938. Oil on canvasboard, 20 x 16

Christianity was only one of the faiths depicted by Tobey. Below a rabbi and a priest walk the bar between figuration and abstraction.

During and following World War II, Tobey created a series of paintings dealing with the atrocities faced by the Jews under the Nazi regime, which he called Der Schrei, which translates into The Scream in English. A separate page with twenty examples of these paintings, one of which is shown below, can be found on his Der Schrei Page.

And Etcetera

Many of the original religious paintings on this page, as well as other traditional and modern paintings by Tobey are available for loan to museums, educational institutions and corporations for exhibition; and a number of them are available to purchase.
